Fresh Air Friday

Green Schools

Green Flag- Travel.

At present, Kilmurry N.S. is on its fourth green flag-
the travel flag. To that end, we want to promote 'greener' ways of getting to school. We have been undertaking a wide range of activities and initiatives to encourage travelling to school in a sustainable manner.
These include:
Baseline Travel Survey
The result of our survey in January 2013 showed that on average over 80% of pupils come to school by car- resulting in traffic congestion at school gates, increased air pollution at school gates as well as safety issues. Its up to us as a school community to come up with solutions that are free.

Recent Research
When we did a mapping we discovered that most of pupils were coming to Kilmurry School from the Sixmilebridge - side. As a result of a walkability audit we picked a park n stride location just a 6-minute walk from the school.

Poster and Slogan Competition
As part of our GreenSchools-Travel promotion, all classes took part in a Poster and Slogan competition. This competition was judged by our local an Taisce/Green Schools Travel co-ordinator - Roisín Garvey.

Launch of 'Green' Friday on March 22nd
To launch the Green Friday Campaign we asked pupils/parents to make the journey to their school a greener and healthier one on March 22nd. On that Friday morning, pupils were encouraged to -walk to school, or to 'Car Pool' or to Park 'n' Stride.

Park 'n' Stride, the pupils and their parents assembled at the entrance to the 'Green' at 8.30am. Hi-visibility vests were worn by most pupils on the day. Luckily, we had a dry morning for the Walk. It was a great success thanks to the efforts of parents and pupils.
We use the Green-Tree initiative and Golden Boot Award to encourage pupils to travel to school in a more sustainable manner.

Green-Schools' National WOW day.
We took part in Green-Schools' National WOW day on May 15th 2013 by walking/cycling to school.
Re-launch of our 'Fresh Air Friday' initiative
We relaunched 'Fresh Air Friday' with a visit from Roisín Garvey - an Taisce/Green Schools Travel Co-ordinator on September 5th . Roisin encouraged all pupils to walk, cycle, car-pool or park 'n' stride when coming to school. Over 90% of pupils travelled to school in a sustainable manner resulting in less congestion outside the school gates. A great start !
Success of the scheme is due to the dedication and commitment of the parents and our caretaker. They help out every Friday.
From September on, the Golden Boot Award will be presented each Friday to the class which has made the best effort at saving energy, reducing litter/waste, saving water and travelling to school in a sustainable way.
